The Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was started in 1969 under the banner of Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India (AOMSI). Its founders included the late Dr MSN Ginwalla, Dr C.K. Dhanasekharan, Late Dr C.G. Raju, Late Dr.K. Ramachandran, Late Dr S.S. Khera and Dr A.P. Chitre.

The AOMSI was officially affiliated to the International Association during the Sydney conference in 1977.

The AOSI was renamed as Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AOMSI) in 1985.

The AOMSI is a registered organization and admits qualified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as Life or Annual members. The Association is committed to the promotion of the specialty through its scientific deliberations and social causes. The Journal is called The Journal of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery and is the official publication of the Association. It is published four times a year from its office in Bangalore.

The Association has two major conventions every year. The Annual Conference is held in November / December in pre-determined venues around the country. The Mid-Term Conference is focussed on post graduate students and trainees and is a two day conference held in June / July every year. In addition, the AOMSI officially participates in Continuing Education programmes held by its members in different parts of the country.

The Executive Committee meets three or four times every year and is the official decision making body.

In 2010 AOMSI has started forming new state chapters by the EC members which are affiliated to AOMSI and constitutionally recognised by the Charter.

AOMSI has recently promoted an Independent Board i.e . Indian Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IBOMS) to promote excellence in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by conducting examinations and awarding Board Certification i.e. Fellowship Degree in Indian Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

The Secretariat of the Association is at the place of residence of the Hon. General Secretary of the AOMSI and is presently situated in Mangalore, Karnataka.
